What is Quality Score?

Definition

Quality Score is Google's 1 to 10 diagnostic of how relevant your keyword, ad and landing page are to a user's search. It is built from expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Higher Quality Score generally means lower cost per click and better ad position for the same bid.

What to know

It is a diagnostic rather than a target. Chasing the number itself is less useful than fixing what it points at, which is usually a mismatch between the query, the ad copy and the page people land on.

The most common cause of a low score is ad groups that are too broad. Tightly themed groups let the ad text echo the query, which lifts both relevance components.
