In short

CPA (cost per acquisition) is ad spend divided by conversions. Spend $2,000 and get 50 conversions and your CPA is $40. The two numbers underneath it are cost per click (spend ÷ clicks) and conversion rate (conversions ÷ clicks), and a rising CPA is always one of those two moving: you are either paying more for traffic or converting less of it.

A rising CPA is always one of two problems

CPA is a composite, so on its own it tells you something is wrong without telling you what. Break it into its parts and the diagnosis is immediate. If CPC climbed, the problem is auction-side: competition, audience saturation, or creative that stopped earning cheap attention. If conversion rate fell, the problem is after the click: landing page, offer, price, or checkout.

Those two failures need completely different fixes, and treating a landing-page problem as a bidding problem is how accounts quietly burn a month of budget.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate CPA?
Divide total ad spend by the number of conversions. $2,000 of spend producing 50 conversions gives a CPA of $40.
What is the difference between CPA and CAC?
CPA is usually per conversion event on a single channel, taken straight from the ads platform. CAC (customer acquisition cost) is normally the fully-loaded, business-wide cost of winning a new customer, including all marketing and often sales salaries. CAC is the larger and more honest number.
What is a good CPA?
Any CPA below your gross profit per order. That is your true ceiling. Calculate it as average order value minus cost of goods, then subtract the profit you want to keep.
