In short

Engagement rate is engagements divided by an audience number, expressed as a percentage. The catch is that there are three different denominators in common use: reach (unique people), impressions (total views) and followers. They give different answers from the same post, so the only rule that matters is picking one and reporting it consistently.

Three denominators, three different answers

Reach counts unique people, impressions count total views, and followers counts an audience that may never have seen the post at all. The same 850 engagements can produce three noticeably different percentages depending on which you divide by, which is exactly why agency reports and influencer media kits so often disagree.

Engagement rate by reach is usually the most honest, because it answers a real question: of the people who actually saw this, how many did something. Engagement rate by followers is the most flattering and the easiest to game, which is why it shows up in pitch decks.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate engagement rate?
Divide total engagements (likes, comments, shares, saves) by your chosen audience number, then multiply by 100. The audience number is normally reach, impressions or followers, and you should state which one you used.
Which engagement rate should I report?
Engagement rate by reach is the most defensible, because it measures response among people who genuinely saw the content. Whichever you choose, use the same one every time or your trend line is meaningless.
