In short
Amazon Sponsored Display is a self-service display format that places your product ads on Amazon detail pages, in search results and across third-party sites and apps, targeted either by product and category or by shopper audience. It can be bought on cost per click or on cost per thousand viewable impressions, and it is the only Amazon self-service format that retargets shoppers off Amazon. An AI assistant can read and manage these campaigns at the campaign level: Muze exposes list_amazon_campaigns, get_amazon_performance, update_amazon_campaign_budget and set_amazon_campaign_state over MCP, with every write previewing before it runs.
What Sponsored Display actually is
Sponsored Display is Amazon's self-service display product. It does not need a keyword. Instead it targets either contexts, meaning specific ASINs and categories where your ad should appear, or audiences, meaning groups of shoppers Amazon has classified by browsing and purchase behaviour. The inventory spans Amazon detail pages, some search placements, and a wide pool of third-party sites and apps reached through Amazon's demand-side infrastructure.
Two capabilities make it worth the trouble. The first is defensive: putting your ad on your own detail pages to crowd out competitors who are buying that same space. The second is offensive: views remarketing, which reaches shoppers who looked at your product and left without buying, including when they are no longer on Amazon. No other self-service Amazon format does the second one.
CPC or vCPM, and why the choice matters more here
On cost per click you pay when someone clicks, and the campaign behaves like the rest of your Amazon account. On cost per thousand viewable impressions you pay for viewable impressions whether or not anyone clicks, which is a reasonable model for a reach objective and a punishing one for a performance objective. The problem is that vCPM makes a campaign look busy immediately. Impressions arrive, the spend curve climbs, and the dashboard feels productive.
If you cannot state in one sentence why you are buying impressions rather than clicks, buy clicks. And when you do run vCPM, judge it on new-to-brand and on detail page views rather than on ACoS, because ACoS on an awareness buy measured through a last-click window will always read badly and will always be argued about.
Where it fits next to the other two formats
Sponsored Products captures existing demand at the moment of purchase. Sponsored Brands competes for the category decision. Sponsored Display works either side of both: on the competitor's page before the decision, and behind the shopper after they leave. That means it should almost never be the first campaign type you fund, and it should almost never be the one you scale first.
The sequencing that holds up: get Sponsored Products profitable and structured, add Sponsored Brands on the category terms you can defend, then use Sponsored Display for retargeting and for a deliberate list of competitor ASINs. Running Display first, on a product with a thin detail page and no reviews, is buying traffic to a page that cannot convert it.
How to set Sponsored Display up so it stays honest
- Decide retargeting or conquesting first. Views remarketing chases people who already saw your product. Product targeting puts you on a competitor's detail page. They are different budgets and different expectations.
- Pick the bid type on purpose. CPC when you want measurable clicks. vCPM when the goal is genuinely reach. vCPM chosen by accident is where the money goes.
- Target specific ASINs, not entire categories, to begin with. Category targeting on Sponsored Display is very wide. Start with a list of competitor ASINs you can actually justify.
- Add negative product targets from day one. Exclude your own ASINs and the irrelevant complements. Otherwise you buy impressions on your own detail pages.
- Review placement and audience splits weekly. Off-Amazon inventory behaves nothing like on-Amazon inventory. Reading them as one number hides both.
The mistakes that cost the most
- Choosing vCPM without deciding to. It is a reach model. On a performance budget it spends steadily and reports nothing you can act on.
- Category targeting straight out of the gate. The reach is enormous and mostly irrelevant. Start with named competitor ASINs.
- No negative product targets. Without exclusions you will serve on your own listings and on complements that never convert.
- Running Display before the detail page is ready. Display sends colder traffic than search. A listing with three reviews and one photo will convert it at a rate that makes the whole format look broken.
- Reading on-Amazon and off-Amazon performance as one number. They are different auctions with different intent. Split them before you draw a conclusion.
What you can ask Muze to do
Muze connects Amazon Ads to ChatGPT, Claude or any MCP client with 48 tools, 12 read and 36 write. These are the real tool names behind each request.
- “Which Amazon campaigns spent the most and returned the least last month?”
Campaign-level rolling metrics plus a daily account series, so the answer is ranked rather than eyeballed. Tools:list_amazon_campaigns, get_amazon_performance. - “Cut this campaign's daily budget to twenty dollars.”
Sets a new daily budget on the campaign. Previews the change, then waits for you to confirm it. Tools:update_amazon_campaign_budget. - “Exclude these competitor ASINs from targeting.”
Batch-creates negative product targets as ASIN or brand exclusions. Created ENABLED so the exclusion is live immediately. Tools:create_amazon_negative_product_targets. - “Pause everything under this profile while we rework the listings.”
Lists what is running, then pauses by campaign id. Pausing stops spend and is reversible. Archiving is a separate tool and is not. Tools:list_amazon_campaigns, set_amazon_campaign_state.
Nothing spends without you
- Every write previews first and waits for explicit confirmation.
- New campaigns, ad groups and product ads are created paused. Negative keywords are the exception: they are created enabled, because an exclusion that is switched off is not an exclusion.
- Pause and archive are separate tools. Archiving is irreversible on Amazon, so it is never what happens when you asked to stop spend.
- OAuth only. No Amazon Advertising API application to file, no keys to manage, and access is revocable.
- Never a percentage of ad spend. You pay for the software. Your budget stays yours.
Frequently asked questions
- Can AI manage Amazon Sponsored Display campaigns?
- At the campaign level, yes. Muze can list Sponsored Display campaigns with their metrics, pull daily performance, change daily budgets, pause and resume, and add negative product targets, all from ChatGPT or Claude over MCP. Creating new campaigns over MCP is Sponsored Products only today.
- What is the difference between Sponsored Display and Amazon DSP?
- Sponsored Display is self-service, buyable from inside the ads console with no minimum commitment. Amazon DSP is the full programmatic platform with broader inventory, richer audience controls and, historically, managed-service minimums. Sponsored Display is the entry point.
- Should I use CPC or vCPM on Sponsored Display?
- CPC unless you have a stated reach objective. vCPM charges for viewable impressions regardless of clicks, which is correct for awareness and expensive for performance.
- Does Sponsored Display show ads off Amazon?
- Yes. It is the only Amazon self-service format that retargets shoppers on third-party sites and apps, which is its main structural advantage over Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands.
- Why is my Sponsored Display ACoS so much worse than Sponsored Products?
- Different intent stage. Display reaches people who have not searched for the product right now, so last-click ACoS will read worse by construction. Judge it on new-to-brand and detail page views, and set a separate target rather than holding it to your search number.
- Can I see Amazon spend next to Meta and Google in one place?
- Yes. get_blended_performance returns total spend across Meta, Google and Amazon against Shopify revenue with blended MER, ROAS and ACoS. It reports which platforms were connected rather than silently omitting one.
