Amazon Ads · Sponsored Products

Sponsored Products is the campaign type that pays the rent.

It is the ad that looks like a search result, which is exactly why it converts. It is also the campaign type most sellers set to auto, fund, and never look at again.

In short

Amazon Sponsored Products are cost-per-click ads that place individual ASINs inside search results and on product detail pages, styled to look like organic listings. They come in two targeting modes: auto, where Amazon matches your product to queries and ASINs on its own, and manual, where you choose keywords or product targets and set a bid on each. Yes, an AI assistant can run them: Muze exposes 48 Amazon Ads tools over MCP, including create_amazon_auto_campaign and create_amazon_manual_campaign, so you can build, target and bid on Sponsored Products from ChatGPT or Claude. Every campaign Muze creates on Amazon lands PAUSED, and every write previews before it runs.

What Sponsored Products actually is

Sponsored Products is Amazon's cost-per-click search ad. It promotes one ASIN at a time, appears in search results and on competitor product pages, and carries a small Sponsored label that most shoppers have stopped registering as an ad. That native placement is the whole reason it outperforms the other formats for direct response: the click lands on the product detail page, which is a page Amazon has spent twenty years optimising for conversion.

The auction is second-price. You set a maximum bid, Amazon ranks the eligible ads by bid and relevance, and the winner pays a penny over what was needed to beat the next ad. The practical consequence is that raising a bid does not raise your cost by the same amount. It raises how often you are eligible to win, which is a different lever and a more forgiving one than most sellers assume.

Auto versus manual, and why you need both

Auto targeting hands query selection to Amazon across four match groups: close match, loose match, substitutes and complements. It is fast to launch and genuinely useful, because it discovers language you would never have guessed customers use for your product. It is also indiscriminate, and left alone it will spend on queries that describe something you do not sell.

Manual targeting gives you keyword or product targets with a bid each, in broad, phrase or exact match. Exact is the tightest control and the highest intent. Broad is the widest net and, on Amazon, broader than most people expect once you factor in the automatic morphological variants. The standard structure is an auto campaign running permanently as a discovery engine, feeding converted queries into manual exact campaigns, with each harvested term negated back in the auto campaign so the two stop competing.

Bids, placements and the multiplier that hides the real cost

Your bid is not what you pay. Amazon applies placement multipliers on top of it: you can bid up top of search, rest of search and product pages independently, and a top-of-search multiplier compounds with the dynamic bidding rule you selected. A campaign set to dynamic bids up and down with a top-of-search multiplier can pay meaningfully more per click than the bid you typed in, which is the single most common reason a campaign's average CPC does not match anyone's expectations.

That is worth knowing before you diagnose a bad ACoS as a bid problem. Check the placement report first. A campaign that is unprofitable in aggregate is often profitable on rest of search and badly unprofitable on top of search, which is a multiplier fix, not a keyword fix.

How a Sponsored Products campaign actually gets built

  1. Pick the ASINs and the campaign type. Group products that share a search intent, not products that share a shelf. One campaign per intent cluster keeps the search term report readable later.
  2. Start with auto targeting to buy data. Auto campaigns let Amazon match your listing against close match, loose match, complements and substitutes. That is not a strategy, it is a research budget.
  3. Create the ad group and product ads. The ad group holds the default bid and the product ads. Every ASIN you want served needs a product ad row in that ad group.
  4. Harvest into a manual campaign. Take the queries that converted in auto and rebuild them as exact-match keywords in a manual campaign, where you control the bid per term.
  5. Negate the harvested terms in the auto campaign. Otherwise the auto campaign keeps bidding against the manual one you just built with your own money on both sides.

The mistakes that cost the most

  • One campaign, every ASIN. It makes the search term report useless. You cannot tell which product earned the query, so you cannot act on it.
  • Auto campaigns with no negatives, running for months. Auto discovers language. It does not stop paying for the bad language it discovered. That is your job.
  • Harvesting a keyword and leaving it live in auto. You now have two of your own campaigns in the same auction. Negate the term in auto the moment you promote it.
  • Judging a new campaign in three days. Sponsored Products data is sparse at the keyword level. A keyword with 40 clicks and no sale is a signal. A keyword with four clicks and no sale is noise.
  • Bidding on brand terms you already own organically. Sometimes correct as a defensive play against competitor conquesting. Often just paying Amazon for traffic that was already yours. Decide deliberately, do not default.

What you can ask Muze to do

Muze connects Amazon Ads to ChatGPT, Claude or any MCP client with 48 tools, 12 read and 36 write. These are the real tool names behind each request.

  • Build a manual Sponsored Products campaign for this ASIN and leave it paused.
Creates the campaign, the ad group with its default bid, one product ad per ASIN and the keyword set in a single chain. Every entity is created PAUSED. Tools: create_amazon_manual_campaign, create_amazon_ad_group, create_amazon_product_ads, create_amazon_keywords.
  • Start an auto campaign to find out what people actually search for this product.
Creates the auto-targeting campaign paused, then lets you set bids per auto target once it is live. Tools: create_amazon_auto_campaign, update_amazon_auto_target_bid.
  • Which of my Amazon campaigns are above target ACoS this month?
Rolling-period spend, sales, orders, ACoS, ROAS, CTR and CVR per campaign, plus a daily series at account level. Tools: list_amazon_campaigns, get_amazon_performance.
  • Give me keyword ideas around this seed term.
Expands the seed through Amazon's own search-bar completion API. Live platform data, no model guessing at it. Tools: get_amazon_keyword_suggestions, list_amazon_asins.

Nothing spends without you

  • Every write previews first and waits for explicit confirmation.
  • New campaigns, ad groups and product ads are created paused. Negative keywords are the exception: they are created enabled, because an exclusion that is switched off is not an exclusion.
  • Pause and archive are separate tools. Archiving is irreversible on Amazon, so it is never what happens when you asked to stop spend.
  • OAuth only. No Amazon Advertising API application to file, no keys to manage, and access is revocable.
  • Never a percentage of ad spend. You pay for the software. Your budget stays yours.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI create Amazon Sponsored Products campaigns?
Yes. Muze exposes create_amazon_auto_campaign and create_amazon_manual_campaign over MCP, along with tools for ad groups, product ads, keywords and product targets. You describe the campaign in ChatGPT or Claude, the assistant assembles it, and you confirm before anything is written. Campaigns are created PAUSED and will not spend until you enable them.
Is there an MCP server for Amazon Sponsored Products?
Muze is one. It covers Amazon Ads with 48 tools, 12 read and 36 write, in the same connection as Meta Ads, Google Ads and Shopify. Most ad MCP servers stop at Meta and Google, so Amazon is one of the harder platforms to reach from an AI assistant.
Should I run auto or manual Sponsored Products campaigns?
Both, in sequence. Auto discovers the queries that convert, manual lets you bid on them precisely. The mistake is running auto alone forever, or launching manual with keywords you guessed rather than keywords you harvested.
What is a good ACoS for Sponsored Products?
The only defensible answer is your break-even ACoS, which is your gross margin on the product. Below it you are profitable on the incremental sale, above it you are buying revenue at a loss and need a reason to be doing so. Published category averages are not useful, because they average across margins that have nothing to do with yours.
Why is my average CPC higher than my bid?
Placement multipliers and dynamic bidding. A top-of-search multiplier and the bids up and down rule can both push the realised cost above the bid you set. Check the placement breakdown before you assume the bid is wrong.
Does Muze support Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display too?
Reporting covers the campaigns on your profile. Campaign creation over MCP is Sponsored Products, auto and manual, because those are the tools that exist today. We would rather say that plainly than let you find out after you connect.
