What is Geo-targeting?

Also known as Location targeting.

Definition

Geo-targeting restricts where your ads can serve, by country, region, city, postcode or a radius around a point. It also carries the setting that catches most advertisers out: by default, platforms may show ads to people merely interested in a location rather than only to people in it. Choosing presence only is the difference between advertising to your delivery area and advertising to everyone who searched for it.

What to know

Geography is also the cleanest incrementality test available to most advertisers. Holding ads out of a set of comparable regions and comparing total revenue is more honest than any platform-attributed figure.

Exclusions matter as much as inclusions. Areas you cannot ship to, cannot service, or cannot legally advertise in should be excluded explicitly rather than left to a radius that approximately covers the right place.
